A useful social media engagement should explain the audience, the content, the approval process and how progress will be reviewed. Post counts alone do not describe the work.
Expect a plan before a calendar
A monthly calendar is easier to assess when you know what it is trying to achieve. Ask who the content is for, which questions it addresses and what a useful response would look like. The answer may be awareness, product understanding, community conversation or an enquiry.
For a small homeware brand, content pillars might include using the product, explaining materials and answering buying questions. A professional service may need a different mix: process explanations, practical advice and the questions customers ask before making contact.
Choose a sustainable platform mix
Start with where your likely customers spend attention and the kind of content you can consistently produce. A visually led consumer brand may prioritise Instagram. A business selling professional expertise may consider LinkedIn. YouTube requires a workable video production process; Pinterest needs appropriate visual content and a destination worth visiting.
These are planning examples, not promises that a platform is right for every business. Ask what each channel contributes and who will maintain it. A smaller, well-supported presence can be more useful than abandoned profiles everywhere.
Know what production includes
“Social media management” can mean very different things. Separate strategy, copy, design, video editing, filming, on-camera talent, publishing and community replies. Editing footage you supply is not the same task as arranging a shoot.
Your proposal should state content formats and quantities, required inputs, revision rounds and what happens when an approval is late. Clarify whether replies cover public comments, private messages or both, and when a business-critical question must be handed back to you.
Make approvals easy to follow
Nominate one final approver. Give the agency current product details, accurate offers, brand assets and the information it needs to avoid mistakes. Agree a place to review work and a deadline that allows reasonable revisions.
For example, a café promoting a weekend menu should confirm availability and pricing before the creative is scheduled. A good-looking post with an expired offer damages trust. Clear inputs are part of good execution.
Ask for reporting you can use
A report should connect activity to the agreed purpose. Content reach and engagement can show how people responded, while website actions may need separate tracking. A WhatsApp click is not automatically a qualified lead, and a sale may happen through a route the social platform cannot fully observe.
Ask what changed, what may explain it and what will be tested next. A useful review may recommend clearer hooks, a better destination page or more product demonstrations. Avoid treating one strong post as proof of a repeatable business result.
Keep paid advertising separate
Organic publishing and paid distribution are different scopes. If advertising is included, identify the media budget, management fee, creative production and tracking responsibilities. Your business should retain control of its accounts and assets.
You should also know how assets will be handed over if the engagement ends. Discuss licences for stock images, music and talent before those assets are reused across channels.
What to ask before signing
Ask who will write and design, how much time you need to contribute, which approvals are required and what is excluded. Ask how the agency handles factual corrections and urgent updates. These questions tell you more about the working relationship than a promise of viral growth.
Our social media management service and social media plans use this scope-first approach. Chai se shuru, strategy ke saath aage.
